Ladies’ Flex Golf Shafts, Explained
Golf shaft flex rating is one of the most important attributes of a golf shaft. It indicates not just how flexible a shaft is overall, but generally how high the kickpoint is, and how it loads and unloads energy during a swing. It also can influence torque, which in turn will impact whether or not the face is open, closed or square at impact.
This being the case, shaft flex also heavily influences launch and spin characteristics, which significantly influence not just carry distance but also shot dispersion as well as how far the ball rolls once it comes down.
Therefore it behooves you to understand some of the lingo and ratings associated with golf equipment; one such label is called a “Ladies” or “L” flex. Here’s what you should know.
What Is Ladies’ Flex?
There is no single industry standard for what a ladies’ flex golf shaft actually is, but that being the case, a ladies flex is still one of the most flexible, softest shaft flex ratings generally used by golf shaft manufacturers, considerably softer than a regular or “R” flex shaft.
There are a few reasons that ladies flex golf shafts are so designed. First, the higher flexibility of the shaft helps to accommodate slower swing speeds. By loading more effectively and more elastically, the softer flex rating can be more efficient at energy transfer, helping those with slower swing speeds hit the ball further.
There are two primary mechanical ways that golf shafts with softer flex ratings accomplish this. One is through higher launch angles, the other is through higher spin. Both work in different ways and they are exclusive traits that are often, but not always, found in the same shaft.
Higher launch angles produce greater carry distance for what should be obvious reasons. If you can’t hit the ball further at a given speed with muscle alone, you just launch it higher. This helps it carry, but can also introduce excess shot dispersion.
Backspin also helps carry a golf ball because when the ball spins, it produces lift, which literally helps it float farther. This can improve carry distance, but it can also increase shot dispersion because golf ball spin can be somewhat unpredictable.
Another thing about softer golf shaft flex ratings, like ladies flex, is that they shafts themselves tend to be a little more forgiving. The softer feedback also has the potential to positively influence feedback, which some golfers prefer.
All in all, these are some of the main reasons that ladies flex golf shafts are preferred by some women players, especially beginners.
