US CMA Course in India: Eligibility, Structure and Career Scope
Learn what the US CMA course is, who can take it in India, how the two exam parts work and what careers it leads to.
The Certified Management Accountant (CMA) credential from the Institute of Management Accountants (IMA) in the United States is a respected qualification for management accounting, financial planning and strategy roles. The US CMA course is increasingly popular with Indian commerce graduates, CAs and finance professionals who want a global credential.
What is the US CMA course?
The US CMA focuses on how finance supports business decisions: planning, budgeting, cost management, performance analysis, decision support and strategic financial management. It is different from the Indian CMA (Cost and Management Accountant), which is awarded by a different institute, so be careful not to mix the two.
US CMA eligibility
As per IMA, candidates generally need:
- A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution, or an equivalent qualification recognised by IMA. Indian degrees are usually assessed for equivalence.
- IMA membership and registration for the exam.
- Two years of professional experience in management accounting or financial management, which can often be completed before or within a set period after passing the exams.
Students in the final year of a degree can sometimes begin the exam stage, but rules change, so confirm with IMA.
Exam structure
The US CMA course has two parts: Part 1 and Part 2. Each part has multiple-choice questions and written essay questions, and is typically taken in a computer-based test centre.
Time frame
Candidates must usually complete both parts within a fixed period after entering the programme, so planning matters .
