Why You Should Store Your Replica Blade Sword Outside of Its Scabbard

Of course it is the case that you get a replica blade sword for display, so keeping it in its scabbard is just going to harm its aesthetic import.

But there is a very good material reason that you should store your replica blade sword out of its scabbard, even if you don’t have it proudly displayed.

It has to do with rust. Here’s what you need to know.

The Issue with Storing a Replica Blade Sword in Its Scabbard

First, we need to get an inconvenient truth out of the way. There is no such thing as a truly stainless steel. If you try hard enough, any steel will rust. This applies equally to the alloys used to make swords as it does to anything else made with steel.

That being the case, even a stainless steel sword will rust if conditions are right, and leaving the sword in its scabbard for any prolonged period of time is a great way to foment conditions that will engender rust.

Specifically, most sword scabbards are made of wood or leather, or wood wrapped with leather. Some are made with steel or plastic, which is even worse.

For one, leather and wood are absorbent. Even though they breathe, they can absorb moisture and then “exhale” it into the space that secures the sword. This causes rust.

Plastic and steel are even worse, because, though they are not absorbent, they don’t breathe. They will literally trap whatever moisture the air carries next to the sword’s blade, encouraging rust to form.

So, the solution is simple: whether you are displaying your sword openly or putting it away for long-term storage, make sure it is separate from its scabbard.

Other Tips and Tricks to Keep Rust Off the Blade

Keeping the blade open to the air is just one effective way to keep rust off the blade. There are others.

One is to avoid touching the blade. There are oils and salts in your skin that will cause rust if they come in contact with the steel.

The other is to treat the blade with either an appropriate oil, like knife or gun oil, or else with a microcrystalline wax. These treatments will help create a barrier between the sword’s blade and air and moisture. This is arguably the best tip for keeping rust off the blade.

Also, if you have a battle ready sword and you use it for cutting practice, you should always fastidiously clean the blade after use. Even if the blade is ostensibly clean and dry, even a little bit of acid (for instance from fruit juice) that lingers on the blade will damage the finish, etch the blade, or result in a patina.
