Newborn Essentials Checklist for First-Time Parents in Pakistan

Before You Start: A Note on "Enough"

Walk into any baby store or scroll through a parenting group, and you will find lists that run into the hundreds of items. It is easy to feel that you are already behind before your baby has even arrived. The truth is quieter than that: newborns need warmth, milk, clean diapers, and you. Everything else exists to make those four things a little easier.

This checklist is written for first-time parents in Pakistan, with local realities in mind — hot summers with load-shedding, chilly winter nights, joint-family homes where hand-me-downs circulate freely, and markets full of both wonderful and questionable products. Use it as a starting point, not a shopping race.

Clothing: Soft, Simple, and Easy to Change

Newborns grow startlingly fast and go through several outfit changes a day. Choose soft, breathable cotton that is gentle on delicate skin, and favour envelope necklines or front snaps over anything that has to be pulled over a tiny head.

  • 6 to 8 cotton bodysuits (half sleeves for summer, full sleeves for winter)
  • 4 to 6 footed sleepers or night suits
  • 2 soft caps for the first week or two
  • 2 pairs of scratch mittens
  • 4 pairs of socks
  • 2 light blankets for layering

Look for fabrics certified gentle for baby skin, such as OEKO-TEX cotton, and wash everything once before your baby wears it to remove manufacturing residues. Shops like a trusted newborn essentials store focus on mom-tested newborn clothing in soft fabrics, which helps when you are buying online and cannot feel the material first.

Diapering: The Everyday Reality

You will change roughly eight to twelve diapers a day in the beginning. Set up a small station — a basket with diapers, wipes, and cream — wherever you will do most changes.

  • Two to three packs of newborn-size diapers to start
  • Fragrance-free baby wipes for changes and quick clean-ups
  • A gentle diaper rash cream
  • A waterproof changing mat
  • A small lidded bin for used diapers

Do not stockpile newborn-size diapers — babies outgrow them within weeks, and unopened packs can usually be exchanged for the next size.

Feeding, Whatever Path You Take

Feeding looks different in every home — breast, bottle, or a mix of both — and every version is valid. The essentials overlap far more than the marketing suggests.

  • 4 to 6 feeding bottles with slow-flow nipples
  • 4 to 6 soft bibs
  • 6 to 8 burp cloths or soft muslin squares
  • A bottle brush and a simple drying rack

If you are nursing, add two comfortable nursing bras and a pack of breast pads to your own kit. If you are formula feeding, a good insulated flask for warm water will save you many midnight trips to the kitchen. Keep a water bottle and a snack within arm's reach of your feeding spot.

Bath Time and Skincare

Newborns do not need daily baths. Two to three times a week is plenty, with warm sponge wipe-downs for the face, neck folds, and diaper area in between. When you do bathe your baby, keep one hand on the baby at all times and keep products minimal.

  • A small baby bathtub or a sturdy, clean basin
  • 2 hooded towels
  • A gentle, fragrance-free baby wash
  • A soft sponge or washcloth
  • A mild baby lotion for dry patches

Pat the skin dry rather than rubbing, and apply lotion while the skin is still slightly damp to lock in moisture.

Sleep: The Space They Will Actually Live In

Your baby will sleep sixteen to eighteen hours a day at first, in short stretches. A safe, simple sleep space matters far more than a decorated nursery, and it is worth setting up before the baby arrives because you will not have the energy for assembly later.

  • A crib, bassinet, or firm-surfaced baby nest
  • 2 to 3 fitted sheets so you always have a spare
  • 2 to 3 swaddle wraps or light swaddle blankets
  • A dim night light for night feeds

Keep the sleep surface bare — no pillows, bumpers, stuffed toys, or heavy blankets. Room-sharing for the first six months makes night feeds easier.

A Few Things for Mom Too

Newborn lists have a habit of forgetting the person doing most of the recovering. Pack a small kit for yourself before the due date: maternity pads, comfortable high-waisted underwear, a water bottle you can open one-handed, nipple cream if you are nursing, and snacks for night feeds.

Putting It All Together Without the Stress

You do not need to buy everything from ten different shops and coordinate ten different deliveries. Ordering from one reliable store means a single parcel to track and consistent quality across everything inside it. With cash on delivery available across Pakistan, you can shop the full newborn range online, pay at your doorstep, and message their WhatsApp support at +92 325 4981573 if you need help choosing sizes before you order.

Start with this list and let real life edit it — the most relaxed parents are the ones who bought what they actually used.
