The ESEE Laser Strike may not be the brand’s most popular entry, but as a bushcraft knife, it is certainly highly versatile and is made with a bunch of features that certainly give it an edge over the competition, even popular models like the ESEE 3, 4 and Izula. 

Here are 6 aspects of this knife, some of which it shares in common with other ESEE Knives and others that are unique to it.

The Design Is Comfortable in Multiple Different Grips 

The handle design of the ESEE Laser Strike, which incorporates a generous choil, is very comfortable in a variety of different grips. The choil helps with indexing in the standard grip, and even when inverted it handles well. It can also be held very comfortably in a saber grip or pinch grip, making it an excellent knife for a wide variety of survival and camp tasks.

There Is a Negative Space Between the Scales

If you take the scales off of an ESEE Laser Strike, you will notice that there is a small void between them that corresponds to a slotted void in the tang. This slot is perfectly sized for a bit of storage, and can accommodate many types of small ferrocerium rod fire starters, though it could also be used to house a small flint wheel, tinder, fishing line or other similar survival equipment. 

The Edge and Logo Will Rust If You Are Not Careful

The ESEE Laser Strike, like most other ESEE Knives, is made from 1095 steel. It is powder coated to protect against corrosion, but the edge and logo are exposed and will rust if you are not judicious about protecting them. 

The Steel Is Fairly Soft, but That’s Not Necessarily a Bad Thing

Another thing about the 1095 steel used by ESEE Knives is that it is fairly soft. The downside is it gets dull fast. The upside is that, even with a soft stone, it’s easy to bring the edge back in the field. For a bushcraft knife like the Laser Strike, this is more of a blessing than a curse. Just ask anyone that has tried to sharpen a much harder steel in the field with nothing more than a pocket stone.

The Sheath Can Be Mounted in Multiple Configurations 

The ESEE Laser Strike, like many other ESEE Knives, comes with a thermoplastic sheath that is perforated around the margin and which offers an excellent friction fit. As a result, it can be mounted in a wide variety of configurations, such as for pack carry or scout carry. This makes it much more versatile and accommodating than other knife sheaths, like leather sheaths, even though it isn’t quite as aesthetically pleasing. 

The Spear Point Is Tough and Utilitarian 

Most ESEE Knives have drop point profiles. The Laser Strike has a spear point profile, which means that the blade is symmetrical. This in turn means that the point can be used for tasks such as drilling holes through planks or boards, which would be much harder to accomplish with other blade profiles, such as the drop point mentioned. All in all, it increases the versatility and usability of the knife.
