Machine Tool Accessories: Types of Machine Tool Holders
A tool holder is a vital machine tool accessory that secures the cutting tool and serves as the interface between the machine itself and the cutting tool. However, there are many different types of machine tool holders out there that are used for distinctly different applications. Here are some of them.
Collet Chucks
Collet chucks consist of a chuck body, shank, and fastening unit that secures the tool. They are highly versatile since many different collet sizes can be used with one tool holder, and they can also accommodate many different shank sizes and types. By tightening the nut, the collet is forced inward, which applies uniform concentric force around the cutting tool. They also offer low runout, even pressure and high stability.
There are also both single angle and double angle collet systems. Among single angle collet systems there are ER collet chucks that are suitable for most general drilling and high-speed milling applications. There are also TG/PG single angle collet systems that are more suitable for heavier drilling and milling.
Double angle collet systems are smaller and simpler to use, but do not deliver the same level of concentricity or grip force as single angle collet systems, making them relatively unsuitable for precision, high-speed applications.
End Mill Holders
End mill holders are used to secure end mills, and are often used in end milling applications in preference to collet chucks because they allow for stronger clamping and greater rigidity than collet chucks.
Milling Chucks
For lower-speed milling applications, milling chucks offer a good deal of performance where precision is needed. They also offer solid concentricity and sideload capabilities, but are limited in terms of the speeds at which they can be run.
Hydraulic Toolholders
Relatively easy to use, hydraulic toolholders uphold tight tolerances and are adept at minimizing chatter, which reduces stress on the tool, thereby extending tool life. They also offer excellent balance and uphold high runout capabilities.
Tapping Holders
Tapping holders are used in thread milling applications, and are used to hold the thread mill that cuts (usually) internal threads on the workpiece. There are several different types of tapping holders, including but not limited to rigid, floating, torque-controlled and quick-change tapping holders.
Face Mill Holders
Face mill holders are also known as shell mill holders and are used for the purpose of holding indexable cutters for face milling, which entails the process of removing material from the face of a workpiece (hence the name) leaving the desired surface finish. There are several different methods for securing a mill in a face mill cutter; some use lock screws whereas others use socket head screws.
