AILET 2027 Syllabus Section Wise: Topics and Weightage

71

AILET 2027 UG has three sections: Logical Reasoning (70 questions), English Language (50) and Current Affairs and General Knowledge (30), giving 150 questions in 2 hours. There is no Mathematics section and no separate Legal Reasoning section, and no prior legal knowledge is required to begin preparing.

If you are deciding whether AILET suits you, the first thing to know is what the paper actually tests. This guide gives you the ailet 2027 syllabus section wise breakdown, with the question count and weightage of each part, a worked example for every section, and the scoring rules that should shape how you attempt questions. The aim is to help you build a study plan around the real paper, not around guesses.

AILET is the law entrance for NLU Delhi. Its paper is shorter in subject range than CLAT's, because it drops Legal Reasoning and Quantitative Techniques. That makes the preparation more focused, but it also means each section you do have carries a lot of weight. Read the trade-offs below before you commit your time. For more detail, see our page on CLAT vs AILET 2027 | Differences & Which to Choose | Clat Coaching.

AILET 2027 syllabus section wise: what each part tests

The paper has three sections. Logical Reasoning is the largest, and it accounts for close to half the marks. English Language and Current Affairs with General Knowledge make up the rest. Here is the split as the official syllabus summary presents it.

Section Questions Approximate share of paper
Logical Reasoning 70 About 47%
English Language 50 About 33%
Current Affairs and General Knowledge 30 About 20%
Total 150 100%

Each correct answer earns 1 mark, so the total paper is 150 marks across 2 hours. The absence of Mathematics means you do not need to prepare for numerical problem solving, but it does not mean the paper is easy. Reasoning and reading carry most of the load. If you want to see how this differs from the other major law entrance, the CLAT 2027 exam pattern page sets out its structure, marking scheme and duration side by side with AILET.

Logical Reasoning: the largest section

Logical Reasoning is 70 questions, about 47% of the paper. Because it is the biggest block, a weak showing here is hard to recover from. Most of your study hours should go here, and you should practise it every week rather than in one long burst before the exam.

The skill being tested is whether a conclusion follows from the statements given. Read the full statement set first, then check the conclusion against only the information provided, without importing outside assumptions.

Example: the statement says all students who clear the test join the club, and Riya has joined the club. Does it follow that Riya cleared the test? No. The rule runs one way. Joining the club does not confirm that you cleared the test. Practise spotting these invalid conclusions daily, and keep a short list of the patterns you get wrong most often.

For a topic-by-topic checklist of what sits inside this section, the full ailet 2027 syllabus section wise is the best place to start, and you can tick off each topic as you cover it.

English Language: 50 questions of reading and language skill

English Language has 50 questions, about a third of the paper. The section rewards steady reading. Cramming vocabulary lists in the final week is much less useful than reading a passage each day and reasoning about it.

Practise passages in timed sets. Before you look at the answer options, state the main idea of each paragraph in your own words. This habit stops you from choosing an option that is true of the passage but does not answer the question asked. Readers who want more detail can start with our page on CLAT 2027 Exam Pattern | Marking Scheme & Duration | Clat Coaching.

Example: after reading a passage on a court judgment, write one line stating the main point and one line listing a supporting detail. Separating the two trains you to see the difference between the central argument and a minor fact, which is exactly where wrong options usually hide.

Current Affairs and General Knowledge: 30 questions that reward a steady habit

Current Affairs and General Knowledge has 30 questions, about 20% of the paper. The section does not reward a last-minute rush. A short, regular habit of noting what happened and why it matters will serve you far better than reading headlines the week before the test. Readers who want more detail can start with our page on CLAT Coaching Delhi.

Example: suppose a news story reports a new environmental rule. Note who issued it, what it changes and when it took effect. Then link it to the background concept it relates to, such as the institution responsible or the law it amends. A one-line note with a linked concept is more useful than a long summary you never revisit.

If you are also considering CLAT, note that its paper mixes news-based passages with linked general knowledge. The same notes habit therefore serves both exams, so it is not wasted time if you change your mind later.

Scoring rules and how they change your attempts

AILET awards 1 mark for each correct answer and deducts 0.25 marks for each wrong answer. Unanswered questions carry no penalty. That single rule should change how you approach every question. More on this is on our page on CLAT vs AILET 2027: Difference, Pattern & Which to Pick | Clat Coaching.

Example: suppose you answer 40 questions correctly and 8 incorrectly. Your deduction is 8 multiplied by 0.25, which is 2 marks. Your score is 40 minus 2, so 38. Now suppose you guess on 20 questions with no basis, and 5 of them come out correct. You gain 5 marks and lose 15 times 0.25, which is 3.75 marks. The random guesses are a net loss.

The practical rule is simple. Attempt a question when you can eliminate at least one option with a clear reason. Leave it blank when you cannot. This keeps your negative marking under control and protects the score you have earned.

Choosing AILET alone or alongside CLAT

AILET is the right choice when NLU Delhi is your clear goal and you are comfortable with a reasoning-heavy paper that has no Legal Reasoning or Quantitative section. The narrower syllabus can be a real advantage for a focused student, since you prepare fewer topics in depth.
