Here are seven ideas that real people start with modest savings and a few weekends of planning, along with what each one actually requires.

Startup cost is close to zero. No special equipment is needed beyond a leash and a phone. Most areas require only a standard local business registration, not a special license, though it's worth checking city rules directly. The main investment is time. Building a client base usually starts with neighbors, local Facebook groups, or an app like Rover, before word of mouth takes over.

2. Freelance writing or content writing

A laptop and an internet connection cover most of the setup cost. The real barrier is building a portfolio, which usually means taking a few lower-paid jobs early on to have samples to show. Sites like Upwork and Contently connect writers with clients directly, and a personal website helps once there's enough work to showcase.

3. Home bakery under cottage food laws

Many U.S. states allow home bakers to sell baked goods directly to customers under cottage food laws, without a commercial kitchen.
