7 small business ideas worth starting this year

Most "top business ideas" lists read the same way. They list trendy concepts with no mention of what it actually costs to start one, or how much time it takes before it earns anything. Here are seven ideas that real people start with modest savings and a few weekends of planning, along with what each one actually requires.

1. Pet sitting or dog walking

Startup cost is close to zero. No special equipment is needed beyond a leash and a phone. Most areas require only a standard local business registration, not a special license, though it's worth checking city rules directly. The main investment is time. Building a client base usually starts with neighbors, local Facebook groups, or an app like Rover, before word of mouth takes over.

2. Freelance writing or content writing

A laptop and an internet connection cover most of the setup cost. The real barrier is building a portfolio, which usually means taking a few lower-paid jobs early on to have samples to show. Sites like Upwork and Contently connect writers with clients directly, and a personal website helps once there's enough work to showcase.

3. Home bakery under cottage food laws

Many U.S. states allow home bakers to sell baked goods directly to customers under cottage food laws, without a commercial kitchen. Rules vary significantly by state: some cap annual revenue, some restrict which products qualify, and some require a food handler's permit. Checking the specific state's cottage food law before selling anything is a required first step, not an optional one.

4. Residential cleaning service

Startup costs are modest: basic cleaning supplies and reliable transportation cover most of it. Demand tends to be steady since cleaning is a recurring need rather than a one-time purchase. Building a client base usually starts with a few referrals. Pricing typically follows either a flat per-visit rate or an hourly rate, depending on the local market.

5. Social media management for small businesses

This one requires a skill more than capital. It means understanding how to grow an audience on Instagram, TikTok, or Facebook for a business that doesn't have time to do it themselves. Many local businesses, salons, restaurants, boutiques, need this and don't have anyone on staff doing it well. A portfolio built from one or two early clients, even at a reduced rate, tends to open the door to paying ones.

6. Online reselling

Thrifted and vintage clothing resale through platforms like Depop, Poshmark, and eBay has a low barrier to entry. It means sourcing inventory from thrift stores or estate sales, then photographing and listing it. The work is mostly sourcing and customer service. Margins depend heavily on sourcing skill, since a well-priced find can resell for several times its cost, while a poor one may barely break even.

7. Tutoring or online course creation

Subject-matter expertise is the main requirement, not capital. Tutoring can start hyperlocal, through a school, a community center, or word of mouth, before expanding to platforms like Wyzant or Outschool. Turning that same expertise into a recorded course on a platform like Teachable adds a second, more passive income stream once the material already exists.

What these seven ideas have in common

None of them require significant upfront capital. All of them can be tested part-time before becoming a full-time commitment. And all of them depend more on consistency and word of mouth than on advertising budgets.

Before starting any of these, it helps to write down the basics. What will the business actually sell? Who buys it? What does it cost to get there? See What Is a Business Plan? for how to put that together, even in a simple one-page version.
