South Indian Kerala Trip: Days, Sights and Timing

Give a South Indian Kerala trip 3 to 4 days if you want one region well, or 8 to 12 days for the full north to south route. Base yourself in Kochi or Alleppey, give Munnar its own day with an early start, and aim for October to March for the easiest weather.

I have guided guests through Kerala for years, and the mistake I see most often is planning too much. The state looks small on a map, but the roads are slow, winding and often busy. A good plan moves at the pace of the roads, not the pace of the itinerary. This guide sets out how many days Kerala deserves, the sights in a sensible order, the best season, how to get around, the etiquette that matters, and one practical day you can adapt.

How Many Days a South Indian Kerala Trip Deserves

My working rule is one region per day. Kerala has distinct zones: the Kochi coast, the Alleppey backwaters, and the hill country around Munnar and Thekkady. Trying to cover two of them in a single day means spending the afternoon in a car. Munnar is roughly 4 hours' drive from Kochi each way, so it needs its own day with an early start rather than being squeezed in alongside another plan. Munnar and Alleppey cannot realistically be combined in one day from Kochi either. More on this is in Kerala Complete Tour Guide & Packages.

For a short visit of 3 to 4 days, stay in one region. Kochi works well: Fort Kochi, a nearby beach and a backwater cruise can fill a relaxed long weekend. If you are a first-time visitor who wants the backwaters and the hills, 7 to 8 days lets you do Kochi, Alleppey and one hill day without rushing. The full north to south route, with a slower pace and rest days, suits 8 to 12 days. For reference, the Kerala Backwaters Tour package listed by Experience My India runs 7 days and 6 nights, and its Ayurveda Retreat runs 10 days and 9 nights, so you can see how the state's pace translates into a full trip.

If you only have a few days and want a wider picture of southern India, a short route across several states is a different trip. The Experience My India three day South India guide sets out that kind of short itinerary, which is worth reading before you commit to Kerala alone.

Slow travellers, honeymooners and anyone who wants Ayurveda or cooking classes should allow longer. Families with older children may prefer fewer moves and more time at each base. Whatever your pace, avoid changing base more often than you must.

Sights in a Sensible Visiting Order

Start in Kochi, since most international flights land nearby and the city makes a gentle first stop. Fort Kochi's old town is a good half day walk. Look for the Chinese fishing nets, the Dutch Palace and Jew Town. Walk slowly, stop for tea, and leave the middle of the day for rest. If you want a taste of the water, a short backwater cruise from Kochi's own backwaters gives a sense of the landscape without a long journey. Cherai Beach, about an hour from the city, works as an optional half day beach stop. If you are also planning a trip, our South Indian Kerala may help.

Next, move to Alleppey. Here the backwaters are the main draw. A day houseboat cruise, or a shorter canoe or shikara ride through the narrower canals, gives the postcard view without an overnight stay. Many visitors assume they must sleep on a houseboat to see the backwaters properly, but a day trip covers the landscape well. Marari Beach is a short drive away and makes a quieter half day, good for a slow lunch and a walk along the sand.

Close with the hills. Munnar's tea estates need a full day and an early start, because the drive from Kochi is long and mornings are the best time for views. Thekkady and Periyar is the other hill option. It offers a spice plantation walk and a boat safari on Periyar Lake, but the drive is longer, so treat it as a full day of its own. You may also like private Kumarakom backwater cruise.

Region Main sights Time needed
Kochi Fort Kochi walk, Dutch Palace, Jew Town, Chinese fishing nets Half day walk, plus an optional backwater cruise
Cherai Beach Beach stop, about an hour from Kochi city Half day
Alleppey Day houseboat, canoe or shikara ride through the narrower canals Day
Marari Beach Quieter beach, a short drive from Alleppey Half day
Munnar Tea estates, roughly 4 hours' drive from Kochi each way Full day with an early start
Thekkady and Periyar Spice plantation walk, boat safari on Periyar Lake Full day, longer drive

Best Time to Visit Kerala by Season

October to March is the main window for sightseeing and outdoor activity. Temperatures are more comfortable for walking the old town, hill walks at Munnar are more pleasant, and the weather is generally easier for planning day trips. This is the period I recommend first-time visitors aim for.

The monsoon months bring heavier rain, and some routes, boat trips and hill roads can be affected. That does not rule out a visit, and some travellers prefer quieter months and greener landscapes. Match the season to your priorities. If a backwater cruise is the centre of your trip, the water is a pleasure in most months. If hill walks and tea estate views matter most, plan for drier weather. Check current conditions for each region before you book, since local advice changes from year to year. For a broader view of planning across the south, the complete South India travel guide covers how seasons work across several states.

How to Get There and Move Around

Most visitors arrive by air. Flights into Kochi and Thiruvananthapuram are the main options to check first, since routes and schedules change, so confirm them when you plan. If you are travelling from northern India, the process of building the route is similar to other long trips, and this guide on planning a South India trip from Delhi walks through the choices step by step.
